is quilt backing fabric thicker or the same as fabric you actually make the quilt with?

It can be thicker - especially if you are using flannel or minkie for the back. I normally use the same weight of cotton for the back as the front. The back is usually one of my more favorite pieces of fabric from the front piecing of my quilts.
