Receiving blankets

Hi Again Ladies, First I want to say thank you for all the help I receive when I ask for help. As you know, I am expecting my first great-grandchild in the fall. I would like to make some receiving blankets. I have asked some of my friends, and it seems everyone has a different idea. Do you use 2 pieces of flannel? Do you use any batting in the middle. Thank you for any suggestions.

I have made tons of these - I use two pieces of flannel - I place them wrong sides together - so the pretty prints are on the outside so you can see them. No batting - I have grandbabies that live in Utah and these keep them nice and warm in the house and car - they still have a big Grandma made quilt that does have batting.
My sewing machine does a hemstitch -(looks like a ladder - missing one long side) so I use that with a Wing Needle in the machine to stitch with - I set my machine for the longest length stitch I can have with that stitch. The wing-needle makes the holes in the fabric for me - I then crochet a shell edge around the outside of the blanket making it nice and pretty! The holes are perfectly spaced so my crocheting looks really good!! They think I am really talented!! LOL
The young mothers I have made these for love them and they wash and wear very well.
I use one yard of material for the top and another one yard piece for the back - I cut the fabric to make a 36" square. The left over strip of fabric I turn into burp/spit rags to match. I stitch those the same way - crocheting a edge on them too.
Another hint - I round the corners of the blanket as it makes it easier to crochet around a curve.
You may have noticed that I do not finish the edge of the flannel - my crocheting goes over that edge and makes it a nice finish and not too bulky. I trim the flannel edge as I crochet around it - just a few inches at a time - that way the edge stays nice and not ravelly.
Congrats on the new addition!
Any other questions - please ask - love to help!
Jana

Jana, thank you so much for your suggestions. Our little one will also live out of state. Dad is in the military. But I think we will be making lots of trips to see our little one. Thank you again!
