Using sheets

Post by Debapril » Wed Mar 02, 2011 5:00 am

I'm quilting a baby quilt for a friend. She gave me a sheet to use for the backing (225 thread count). I've heard that it isn't a good idea to use sheets. Has anyone had any experience with sheets? Thank you. - Debby

If you are machine quilting - you can use a sheet - but if you are hand-quilting it is not good. The threads are too tightly woven together to get you needle through easily. Tying it to presents a problem. My choice is not to use a sheet - it doesn't take alot of fabric to back a baby quilt.

My two cents worth -

I agree with Jana on the sheet. Everything she said!

I've used sheets many times. I especially love the cotton sateen sheets - the recipients of the quilts seem to like those also.

I have used sheets before and never had a problem but I usually machine quilt them. My grandmother often used sheets, soemtimes used ones, on her quilts and most of them held up very well. Of course, everything was made better back then. LOL Happy quilting. Do whatever works best for you. Thanks Jana, for the advice. I never thought about the weave of the sheet fabric for handsewing.

I have never used a sheet either. It is very difficult to get the needle through and I have heard of problems with them machine quilting also. If it works for you though, and that is what she wants, go ahead and do it.

I have used a sheet for a donation quilt but made sure the thread count was not too high. In the UK we can sometimes pick up duvet covers for a good ptice and use those for backing.
