Batting

Post by PKT » Wed Feb 23, 2011 2:27 pm

I just bought some fusiable batting for a twin size quilt. I was wondering if I needed to baste it or would just fusing it with the iron be okay? Also, should I draw my quilting design before or after ironing it on the fabric?

Thanks,

Heat can set marks, so I would hesitant to mark before pressing to the backing. I've not used fusible batting on anything bigger than a tote bag, so I can't tell you if you'll need to also baste.

I too only have used the fusible for tote bags and the such - It will leave marks where the iron has fused it down on some fabrics - I would do a test square off on a left over scrap of the fabric. I think that the best solution is to fuse the backing fabric and then add the top - you then can mark the top separately for all your quilting lines.

You will still need to baste the quilt as it only has the fusible on one side. Safety pins work great and are easily removed and don't stab you as you quilt!

Be careful how you mark - the blue water soluble pens - that disappear with with water become PERMANENT if a iron touches them. I would do all the ironing then do the marking so that nothing gets set permanently. There are chalk powders that stay in place and can be removed with an iron - so watch what you use.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing the quilt!

Try it on a small piece before you do the big. You may not be happy with he results. I have used this only on small projects, since the large size can result in ripply or uneven areas.

If you want to temporarily fuse your top/batting/backing I have had great success using spray baste. I wouldn't use the fusible. As you iron you will be draping it over an ironing board and that will not allow it to lay flat which is important. If you are marking your quilt NEVER EVER subject it to heat (even sunlight in a hot car) this will permanently set your marking.

I'm no help either as I've only used fusible on tote bags. Good luck.
