Handkerchiefs in a quilt
Has anyone made a quilt from handkechiefs? I have a bunch from my mother and thought I could incorporate them into a quilt somehow

If you google 'hankerchief quilts' you will find lots of ideas and there is even a Hankerchief Quilt Guide that shows many interesting ideas. I have a large collection of hankies, too, that are in the back of my mind for 'someday'.

Re: Handkerchiefs in a quilt
Many years ago - back in the 30s, my Mom was a kindergarten teacher. One of her students died, and his mother sent my Mom a handkerchief every year for the rest of her life. I now have all those hankies and would also like to do something with them. Thanks for bringing up the topic, fabricsue! I'll be interested in ALL the responses!

Re: Handkerchiefs in a quilt
I've made 2 handkerchief quilts. I machine zigzagged each one on a light colored solid background fabric square. I used a very small zig-zag stitch and used invisible thread. My aunt has one and my mom has the other. I wanted to do something with all of my grandmother's beautiful hankies. I thought it would be a fun memory piece for her daughters. I still have some more that I want to make - have thought about doing those where the hankie is a ladies dress, or an envelope or a butterfly, but those first 2 I made - the hankies were so pretty all the way around, I couldn't bear to cut them or fold them. They have held up well - my aunt has had hers for over 10 years and my mom has had hers for over 7 years. I set the size of my background squares by making it a little bigger than the largest hankie I was using, then all the smaller ones fit easily. I used a peach background with my aunt's, and a blue background with my mom's. Have fun making one! I love quilts that reuse or preserve memories!
