How to figure yardage
I want to make a quilt for my brother's wedding present. The instructions have told me what size blocks to cut and how many. But, not the yardage. It requires (66) 8.5 inch blocks of light colored fabric and (66) 8.5 inch blocks of dark fabric. How do I figure how much fabric I need?? Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

Re: How to figure yardage
Hi Suzette,
I am looking at a book called All In One Quilters Reference Tool and for 32, 8 1/2 in blocks it calls for 2 yds so 64 blocks would be 4 yds. I would get an extra 1/2 yd to be safe. This is based on 42 inch wide fabric. So it looks like 4 1/2 yds of light & 4 1/2 yds dark. I hope this is right. That is what this little book says though.
Hugs

Don't forget extra yardage for borders as well.

Re: How to figure yardage
Suzette, I have a booklet called "Patchwork Minus Mathwork" and it agrees with Cathy/Agnes - 4 to 4-1/2 yds of light and the same yardage for dark. And, like C/A, I always buy extra 'just in case'. Extra fabric can always be used up! Or it can be included with the quilt for future mending, also a 'just in case' measure. Good luck and don't forget to show it to us later! maryz

Re: How to figure yardage
Ollie, I got a little free card from a quilt store and this is what it says
Twin (63 X 87) - 5 1/4 yds. for backing and 3/4 yard for binding
Double (78 X 87) - 5 1/4 yds for backing and 3/4 yard for binding
Queen (84 X 92) - 7 1/2 yds. for backing and 7/8 yard for binding
King (100 X 92) - 8 yds. for backing and 1 yard for binding
The twin backing is done in two pieces lengthwise
The double and queen backing is done in 3 pieces widthwise
The King is done in 3 pieces lengthwise
Hope this helps, Susie
