Which thread??

Post by Caroline1947 » Mon Jan 12, 2009 4:28 pm

Do you use regular thread or quilting thread for free motion quilting??
I saw quilting thread at Walmart but it seemed a bit stiff and I didnt know if it was for machine or hand quilting...

Hand quilting thread is stiff. It has a glaze on it so the thread won't knot up so bad. It's not good to use in a machine as the glaze will come off and build up inside the tension disc.

Learned my lesson and only use quilting thread. LQS recommended King Tut to me and it's a dream to use.

Caroline, I just recently bought machine quilting thread from Connecting Threads, Essential. It's WAY cheaper than the YLI I used and IMHO is better than Coats. BUT, there is the shipping, too...
Just make sure it says "machine quilting thread". Or I've also used just Dual Duty Coats--Sewbug is right about hand quilting thread!! And if it felt "stiff" that's probably what it was. If Wal Mart is your only option, I'd just get an all purpose thread and be safe.

I have used Guttermann's for SITD machine quilting, and for outline and echo quilting. No problems so far, but I still consider myself a novice at MQing.

I went on a splurge last year and bought a bunch of YLI machine quilting threads in the variegated colors....they have been easy to work with and I *love* the look the variegated threads give to the quilts!

For machine needles, I have had the best results with Schmetz brand, the ones specifically marked "quilting", in size 75/11.

The right thread and needle combination made a HUGE difference for me!

I love using King Tut. My machine did not like Coats & Clark and it linted a lot. This is for the quilting. For piecing I use Aurifil (50 wt.) in the neutral color that goes best with the fabric I'm using.

I have used Connecting Threads, Essential for both machine and hand quilting. But I am a beginner at both.

The Coats variegated thread sews fine in my machine but I've been using Essential thread from Connecting Threads. You can buy it on a big cone now so it's very inexpensive for nice quality thread. My very best favorite thread to use for machine quilting is YLI Silk thread on the mini cone. It's makes my so - so quilting look great.
