sandyw7388 had a good point in another post, not to use expensive fabric for your first quilt. Buy the cheaper stuff.

Or you could do what I did and use second hand fabric. Then you really don't mind if it doesn't come out great; you can just wear it out faster or give it to the dog! Also just tie it. It is a good idea to make sure it is all about the same weight and not to worn out. Look for inexpensive clothing or fabric at thrift shops. 100% cotton is best. This one half of a second hand fabric quilt.
