Organizing fabric by value, anyone done this?

Post by sewbug » Sat Aug 23, 2008 8:13 am

I am once again refolding and organizing my fabric stash. I sort it by color mostly. I was thinking about sorting it by value. Darks, meds, lights. I think that will make more sense in the long run when choosing fabrics. It shouldn't be too hard a chore, I have it all folded and stacked, just look through a value finder and sort. I think I may be surprised at how unvaried my stash really is.

I've done a bit of sorting by value, but I still leave it by color. But whatever works for you.

it's hard to sort mine by value, I don't remember exactly what I paid for it... then I have to multiply the cost of fat quarters by 4 to get the by the yard cost.... naw, think I will just leave mine folded in totes and tear through the totes when I want to find something....

Boy, am I glad I opened this note and read the comments. Some of my pieces of material were gifts from friend who knew my obsession for material. I guess the value of those pieces would be priceless.

I sort my material by types like the 1930's 40's and even the 60's are having a come back. Some of my stash is sorted by the same pattern but different colors. Then there is part of the stash that is sorted by thyme like Mary Engelbreit. The sorted thymes vary: western, juvenile, school, flowers, plaids, polka dots, solids etc. In other words there is no consistency. I guess you could say my stash is a mess, but at least have a bunch of it.

Sewbug, that's an interesting concept. I wonder if I'm heavy on a certain value-never really thought about it. I have mine organized by colors, but one stack is for fabrics from the same line of fabric that I might want to use together in a quilt. And then there are miscellaneous prints that I don't know what color they are because they are multiple. Since I've refolded all my fabrics the same and have organized them, I love looking at them so much more! It helped me a lot and hopefully it will help me remember what I have. My only problem are my fat quarters-they are jammed in plastic drawers because I don't have enough shelf space. How do the rest of you store your fq's or big pieces of scrap fabric?
