I am confused, the regular pattern was also bigger than your 44 inch backing, you are just a shy bit smaller than the original size??

I'd say you did real well if your quilt is only 1/2" different than the pattern says!! Do you have any left over fabric from the front? I usually split my backing, then add a 'row' of scraps from my front. I just piece all the scraps together and then cut the width I need. Sometimes I have left over half square trianges that I sew together and add in. Anything will do! Makes the back interesting, too!

ann yes i do have some scraps left over just could not figure how i ended up half inch to big one way and half inch to small the other way is that not strange looks like if my 1/4 ft was off they would be both length and width either be to small or to large not like it ended up so if i use the scraps for the backing do i cut them selvage to selvage like i did the strips for the front of quilt

The measurements you put in your post show it 1/2" smaller both ways. If that is right, it sounds like your 1/4" seam allowance is just a teeny bit too big. I have that same problem with my new Espire. I can't figure out how to make it a true 1/4" seam allowance.

If you have enough fabric to do whole strips, selvage to selvage, do that, then sew them together like the quilt, then cut sections the size you need to make the back wide enough. If your backing fabric is 44" wide, and you split it, then you would probably need about 6" wide sections, so that the back is slightly larger than the front.

It looks like it is smaller both ways. Therefore the backing instructions they are giving you should work as it is smaller.

Ollie, Try the John Flynn way. Here is the link, just scroll down a little to get the directions for a diagonal backing.

Also, here is the link for the forum topic that was going around in March:

How about adding a pretty border to your backing? That way, pretty on both sides!
