Need help with fabric slection
I have a friend (couple) who is Vietnamize (sp). I would like to make a small quilt for them for Christmas. Maybe a lap size using El's quick trips. I have been trying to get ideas from them without letting on what I am thinking of doing. (Just in case I don't get it done.) They do tend to like the orential/Aisan type fabric. Has anyone worked with these fabrics and can you give me some idea as to which ones to use. I have a couple bookmarked here a QIAD since that is where I would probably buy the fabric. Maybe something at LQS.
Thanks, Kathy
Thanks, Kathy

I've seen 100 cotton fabric that is an Asian print. Some very pretty ones in fact. Would that work?

My friend recently made a patchwork jacket of all Asian print fabrics. It was stunning, and I'm sure a quilt would be, too! Go for it! I'm sure your friends would be thrilled.

Lots of designers have oriental prints out, Hoffman, Kaufman, etc. I think your idea is wonderful and I bet the quilt turns out spectacular.
Good luck and have fun. Sandy

Hello, I have a fabric question I hope some can help me with. My son bought me some fabric that said "Do not use for children wear, do not iron right side and do not dry." Does anyone know why and if it would be safe in a quilt to be used by adults and children? thank you.

I say the same as everyone else... there's tons of oriental 100% cottons out there, even ones with gold or silver thread throughout.

Barefootangel, does the fabric say what it's made out of? I have seen flannel that advises, not for children's sleepware, but never seen any you couldn't wash or dry.

Re: Need help with fabric slection
Barefootangel, Unless fabric is specially treated to be fire retardant, it is not supposed to be used for children's sleepwear, and there is sometimes a finish on the fabric that makes ironing difficult. I would be careful using it in a quilt - someone in the next generation or two may not know that it can't be dried! You might try washing AND drying a small piece to see what happens.

Yes, the fabric is 100% cotton. I thank you so much for your advice. It is a red, white and blue color. The thing is, I have two different fabrics with the same colors (different designs) but says the same thing. I believe I will put them back for some future project. Thank you.
