Looking for directions
I hope you guys don't think I'm a dunce, but I am not much of a quilter. I have a alot of scraps and I'd like to try the quilt that Eleanor did where everything went into a bag and then you just pulled one square out and added it. Are there any specific instructions for that, or is it as easy as I make it sound?

There are no dunce's on this forum.
It's easy. That's the way it is done. As a matter of fact that's what I am doing now. I have so many scraps that I decided that I should put them to use.

I've never done one, but it is my understanding that all the squares need to be the same size, right?

What size squares are you using? Is there any "rule" as to what size? I have a square ruler with the center 4.5" square to be cut out using a rotary cutter so I was thinking I'd use that size.

That's how I did my Apple Core; put all the scraps in a basket, pulled them out one at a time and sewed them on. It comes out looking like you planned it. Make your squares all one size, doesn't matter what size and go for it!

Sounds like something fun to do in between big projects. May try it.

Re: Looking for directions
Some people cut squares (charms) all the same size and put them all in a bag and start by pulling out two. They sew them together and then pull out another square and sew it to the first two, and then another and another and so on, until they have their row as wide as they want it. Then they make more rows. Eventually they sew all the rows together to make the quilt top.
I've heard them called mystery quilts because you have no idea what you'll pull out of the bag next. Some people will only allow themselves one 'Yuck, I can't stand that one next to the last square,' and put that square back and choose another one (or change it if it is the same fabric). Then they are stuck with whatever they pull out the second time. They usually say they really like the way the quilt turned out.
I think the only thing I would do before using my scraps for this would be to make sure I am not using any charms that don't mix well with all the others. I have a lot of 4" squares I cut out once upon a time, and I will probably use them this way.
The next to last quilt shown under 'Quilts for St. Joe's Kids' on this website has a good example of the squares being pretty random.
