Bargain Table Fabric

Is there a list somewhere that gives the name brands/lines of quality quilt fabrics. I just bought some beautiful fabric on a discount table that has SSI on it and was wondering if this was South Seas Imports and if it is considered quilt shop quality.
Just wondering if someone knew of a guide somewhere on the internet that shows all the manufacturers and their lines. I know that some of them produce both shop quality and discount. Just wondering which was which.

Great question! I have bought some South Seas Imports from here and from my LQS and have always been very pleased with them. Maybe PM QIAD Linda and ask her this question. It would be great to know.

Evie! You are the one who finds stuff for us. I sure wish I could help you this time. Sorry, not a clue.

Amie posted on a thread on here one day that she has a magnifier that allows her to count the threads and determine if some of the bargain fabric has the thread count to be considered good quality. I tried to find one but could not. It is called a linen magnifier. I think that Amie got hers at Hobby Lobby but I could not find one like hers. I even emailed the company and they do not sell them from the company or at least they said the shipping would be prohibitive and when I emailed them back to get a price, they never replied. Maybe she will see this and post.

You can buy the R.O.S.E. Thread Counter at
www.thatperfectstitch.com
The thread counter costs 12.99 (however, shipping is high. I checked it out and it would cost 9.97 to VA; which brings total to 22.96)
If you are having a major quilt show in your area (Dierdre will be in Paducah) you may purchase it there.
Vendor name: Roxanne International
Dierdre and her husband are very nice, and great to talk to. (Roxanne was Dierdre's mother.)

Evie I think there are companies who make fabric for both quilt shop and fabric stores. I do believe it is labeled differently though. I have seen on bolts of fabric at the LQS "quilt shop only" or statements to that effect. If you purchased it outside of a quilt shop, it is probably not shop quality. Many quilt shops though do have bargain tables that they sell 50% off and the fabric is shop quality. If you like the fabric and your not looking to make an heirloom quilt, I am not sure it matters enough to purchase an expensive piece of equipment to test it. I would be thrilled with anything that was made for me.

I just looked for the ROSE and can't find it anywhere on the web except their site. A mag glass would work, also the show is coming up. I'm sure you will find it there. But, if I were you, I'd save my $ and just buy Moda and Northcott or something and just stick with the good fabric. I can read the count without that stupid thread counter though. I just shop where all they sell is top of the line anyway. Good manufacturers will not allow their name to be sold at a discount store. Just like you will never see a Bernina on sale at Target. Or a Berkline couch at Walgreens or whatever. If you just sitck with the proven places, some I listed, you will be spending the same amount on TOL os if you bought junky stuff at Walmart. Amie

Evie, there should be the name of the line and designer on the edge also. I googled SSI fabrics and I found a couple of quilt stores that sell it and list it under south seas imports. You could also google South Seas Imports Fabric and see if they list the designer or fabric line. It could be that it is something that is discontinued, and that is why it was on the bargain table. I have some fabric that is SSI and the line is called Butterfly Kisses by Robyn Randolph. I did not find it in the South Seas website but I did find it in some online fabric stores listed under South Seas Fabric line. Hope this helps.
