scalloped edges

Post by karpet » Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:47 am

Does anyone know how to figure out a scalloped edge on a quilt? It is 109" square. I'm thinking larger scallops, and I know I'll have to go with a bias binding.

Great question! Can't wait to hear the answer, I'm a big fat chicken when it comes to scalloped borders and binding. Amie :o)

I put scallops on my kingsize quilt and it was a log easier than I thought it would be.

I used the scallop template from Egg Money Quilts. I started at a corner and worked toward the center. Then I went to the other end and worked toward the center. In the middle I adjusted the center scallop - I can't remember now if it was longer or shorter by a tad.

I had an advantage. I took the quilt up to the school and had it stretched out on the band hall floor. It was a lot easiser than working on it at home. The biggest quilt I have floor space for is at twin - and that's only if I shove furniture out of the way!

I did this appliqued wedding ring several years ago and did scalloped edges. As I remember, it was a real pain until I caught on. Now I'm in the early stages of planning another quilt that has scallopes and I can't remember the "secret" of doing them so it will be like doing them again for the first time. I'll shop around online and hopefully find a good tutorial that will get me started. :)

JudyWoo - you might want to consider getting El's Waves and Scallops ruler.
