Quilt in a Day Forums

I just put my FMQ foot on my machine and made a quilt sandwich and gave it a whirl. It was fun, I will need lots of practice but I think I might actually be able to do it. I have never been brave enough to try because I thought I would not be able to do it at all, now I'm wanting to do more. LOL

Anyway, if you have been procrastinating because you think you can't, give it a try if I can you can to.

What you said really got me inspired and after trying to figure out how to drop the feeder dogs on my machine ever since I got it four years ago, I just now figured it out. You have to remove the "storage box" on the front ... which I never use so why would I take it off and look there? And then tip the machine forward to see a flipper-dial underdeath. I never thought of looking there before. Even the manual doesn't show how to do it. Some days I get so depressed trying to figure out what to do and how to do it that I could just cry. And it doesn't help when DH is constantly trying to pick a fight. I just feel so worn down today.

judy just read about you dropping the feed dogs - i used to drop mine then about 3 years ago read an article in quilters newsletter about a lady who quit dropping hers and gained more control i have not dropped mine since and do have much greater control
try it both ways

just practice practice you can do it when i first started i did doodles then loops and swirls then progressed to the golden threads paper and would trace designs on it - i now have a long arm but do indeed still do alot on my janome especially my art quilts with mixed media i dont want to take a chance of jamming my longarm on a flower stem

I have sewn all my blocks together and dont own a long arm to quilt all at once. Does anyone know of a technique to quilt one square at a time and then sew together? If so how can I get it?

jamodeo, I don't have a long arm either or a frame. I am just practicing on my sewing machine. I know that many quilt their quilts on their home sewing machines. I don't know what kind of a block you are working with but many blocks lend themselves well to stitch in the ditch. All I have done so far is tie and stitch in the ditch, but now I am wanting to learn FMQ, so I have a lot of practicing to do.

gardenquilter, thank you for the info. I just tried it with the feed dogs up and I think I do like it that way. I do have a question though, do you think it is harder on the machine to do it that way or probably doesn't make any difference?

Judy,------ I'm so sorry you are feeling so down today. When I get like that, or the spouse is being a louse, I sit down with one of El's books and/or a DVD and cup of tea and just veg.

Spudgrandma-----I also just took the dive and starte messing around with FMQ. I absolutely love it. The more you practice the easier it gets and the more you want to try. I bought El's book and DVD about Machine quilting and watch it quite often now. I also want to try the EQ quilting designs. I think I need to get some "Pounce" though. I haven't decided which I like best, feeders up or down. I think it kind of depends on if it is continuous swirls or if I'm trying to make a definite pattern like a star.

MAWmum----Try it, You'll like it! I want to try "Thread Painting" now so I can make some leaves and not have to applique.
