HELP - new here

Post by wllsmcky » Sat Jan 19, 2008 10:47 am

My grandmother taught me the basics years ago. I now have a Amish top that I designed and made but don't know how to put together to quilt it. I have the batting and backing and know the basics but don't have the frames to hand quilt. Can you hand quilt with a hoop?? Need advice :)
Thanks,
Mickey

Hi Mickey,

I just wanted to say Hi. I don't hand quilt, but I don't know why you could not do it with a hoop. I'm sure someone who has an answer to your question will be along shortly.

Don't forget to drop by the welcome thread and say Hi so more will see your post. The Welcome Booth is located here: http://www.quiltinaday.com/community/to ... topic=6392

Again, welcome and I know one of these wonderful ladies will be along with an answer to your question.

Welcome! I always hand quilt with a 14 inch hoop in my lap. That is comfortable for me.

Welcome to the forum. I do my hand quilting in a hoop. Just get it real tight, so there are no gaps. The hoop I use is that new hard plastic that fits over the rod. It works good. I didn't really realize how nice is was when I bought it doing ribbon embro, but I do like it. I have also used the round hoops. Have a good time doing it.

Hello & Welcome Mickey. I also use a round wooden hoop. I get it really tight in the hoop making sure there are no puckers or wrinkles in the backing. Then I gently press down on the center of my fabric. I was taught to quilt so that it was just loose enough to look like a cat had been in the middle of it. One of my granny's friends told me that one. LOL Granny lived to be 101 yrs old. You will find whatever is best for you. Practice.

Hi Mickey. We are practically neighbors - only about an hour away from each other. I'm in Cypress. I have a hoop I use to hand quilt and also one of those PVC (JoAnn's) little frame. Good luck. BTW - have you ever been to the Painted Pony in LaPorte. I think it's the best quilt shop in the whole Houston area.
