Re: Wal-Mart Fabrics
I just noticed the post by "corning" in Missouri. This made me wonder if that is after a small nearby town in Ark? I am wondering if someone on here lives near me since my Hancocks recently closed and I have to drive 60 miles south or 90 miles north to find fabric and I also heard that the local Hobby Lobbys will be downsizing. Just curious.

Re: Wal-Mart Fabrics
The Walmart in Pocatello, Idaho says they are keeping fabric in the store because it is profitable. In Pocatello there are only two stores that cater to quilting. I don't buy things too often because of the cost. Then there are two fabric stores. JoAnn's and another store that I don't know the name of...it's a very dirty unorganized store (been there once). Then there is Walmart. I tend to do most of my fabric shopping at JoAnn's and Walmart. When I visit my mom in Utah I like to go shopping at the bigger stores there.

I have used Walmart fabrics and have had no trouble. You do have to be selective because not all of their fabric is the best. As long as you know what you are doing you can get some good deals there.

Re: Wal-Mart Fabrics
Since we travel, I see a lot of Wal Mart's. Last fall I saw some cute fabric in Lexington, NE Wal Mart, but thought, hey they will have it in Bemidji,MN & we spend the night there before crossing into Canada. Got up there & the fabric dept. was gone. It was there the end of June when we went thru. They told me that depending on how much the dept. makes determines which stores keep it or not. We have a new store in Loveland, CO and it has a fabric dept., in fact both stores in town do. Just depends, I guess!

Most of our Walmarts in southeast TN have taken the fabrics out of the stores. We only have one Hancocks anywhere close and one Hobby Lobby. One of our Hancocks closed already.

Re: Wal-Mart Fabrics
I was at the local Wal-Mart store over the weekend and the lady in fabrics said we needed to notify Wal-Mart that we wanted fabric left in the remaining stores. She said the word was out that it would be coming out of several of the remaining stores in the next year or so. I don't know whether it is worth the time to contact Wal-Mart. They appear to have the market cornered in most areas and can and will do whatever they want. Too bad Sam didn't instill his values in his successors.

There were a huge amt of complaints and begging for them to leave their fabric in the Yukon store but it did no good. The one in Mustang still has their fabric but are getting a lot in that they are marking down to $1 & $2 a yd so now I fear they may be getting ready to go out. That was the way the Yukon store did right before they pulled that dept.

Re: Wal-Mart Fabrics
I worked for WalMart for many years until I retired last year. I worked in the offices and the fabric dept. They are on a 3 year plan to phase out the fabric departments. All new stores will open without fabrics and as the other stores are remodeled, they will lose the fabrics. Writing them does no good as their plan is already set, they are trying to reduce service cost by cutting out service areas that don't make as much revenue and increase the size of the ones that do. Such as Electronics and Sporting Goods. The plan started in 2006 so should if they stick to it should have only about a year left.
They did do some reshifting of plans at the first outcry of protest, but only because it suited their purpose to lower the inventory on hand in the warehouses in some areas.
Now they will deny any closings to their employees so the word will not spread out. One store I worked at, it was denied right up to the day before it closed. They had some sales, and the remaining fabric was packed up during the night, inventoried and shipped to another store to be marked down further and sold. The area I live in only has one store in a 50 mile radius that has fabric left. It won't last long as I heard it was scheduled to go out the end of the year.
Mr. Sam cared more for his customers wishes than the current head management, they are only after the Big Dollar. They feel the customer will come anyway for the staple items and the cheap junk from overseas.
