Wal-Mart Fabrics

I live in Cali and don't really visit wal-mart much, too crowded. I did stop in the fabric department to just look around. The clerk there told me they were going to be changing to pre-cut fabrics soon.
She did say to call wal-mart's 800 number to save the fabric depts.

Hi everyone! I'm from Province of Québec, Canada. I went to our Walmart store last Thursday. I noticed that there are less fabrics than it used to be. I've checked with a clerk and she told me that in the vicinity of Montreal there is one store that they have closed the fabric department. As for the other stores, they don't have any slight idea what will happen. They're not closing the fabric department in the USA only, but also in Canada.

I was told by a Wal-Mart employee that ALL Wal-Marts will be closing their fabric departments because they are no longer an economic viable situation.
Good for us quilters. When we spend time to make a heirloom quilt, we need good quality material that will last for generations. Wouldn't it be nice to see the Good Old United States open up its mills to manufacture our materials again. Thank you Wal-Mart.

I found a bolt at WalMart 2 days ago that I wanted a yard from. It was on sale for $2 a yard and it had cardinals, etc. on it. It was medium quality. I sort of talked myself into it because of the price. Well I stood at the cutting counter a good 5 minutes and there was no one around. Witha 2 year old in the cart, 5 minutes is a long time! The whole fabric dept. was quiet. Instead of searching out someone (which at WM can be a huge ordeal), I left the fabric on the counter and left to finish my shopping. Customer service is sorely lacking there.

The Walmart that is nearest to me has some fairly nice fabric. In fact they have a good many of the same fabrics that I find at JoAnn's. There is one LFS that is not too far from my town but their prices are very high and for someone like me who is on a fixed income almost out of my reach. The Walmart here is closing the faric department but I don't know how soon. They still have quite a lot of material. I have been using up or trying to use up some of my stash because of my limited storage space. I usually watch JoAnn's sales and use their 40% coupons. When I shop at the LQS I shop very carefully........

Cranston fabric is made in America. I think it's the only working mill left.

I was told our WalMart would stay open...who knows. Most of the textiles are made in China. Can only imagine how many people were laid off when they began closing. When WM first open years ago, all American products...certainly has changed.

i think you have to watch quality at almost all fabric stores not just walmart - usually the stores dedicated to quilting have a higher quality but joannes and hancocks have some real lulu's too

My Walmart store also is in the process of remodeling to a Super Walmart and they also told us the same but later they said they were going to keep the fabric section and that made me very happy because I practically live at Walmart.
