Wal-Mart Fabrics

I think if you watch what you're buying, you can really get some good fabric at bargain price.
Earlier this summer it was said, that Walmart would be doing away with fabric..Even at mine, the gal said, she wasn't supposed to be ordering any longer...Well, that was summer and now they have more fabric than before..I think the people spoke! But I also heard, any Walmart in Amish country would keep their fabric department...I'm sure this is not what Sam had in mind years ago when he started his stores....
what I did notice, our Walmart no longer carries the little skeins of floss or any cross stitching materials....

Ill say this again, all Walmarts are not equal. Some carry better fabrics than others and some have the same as LQSs...its just cheaper because they get it in bulk.They have some cheapo stuff not much good for anything, but they have nice stuff too at mine. I use the dollar a yars stuff as backing for wall hangings and have had no problem. I just wash it first.Ours has no batting selection though.just one brand in a package.

I was at our WalMart the other day, and the fabric department was MUCH reduced in size. No sales, though. And my experience in retail is that the salespeople will be the LAST to know if they are going to close that department. So check it out every time you go, buy the nice stuff when you can!

We live in a rural area and our "super center" in the nearest town is very small. It is supposed to continue to have a fabric department but the embroidery supplies are reduced and they won't be carrying them much longer. They carry Warm & Natural by the yard along with the wide muslin.

Our county is very depressed so we always try to shop locally because of the tax dollars staying in the county. I work several miles away in a city. I do not frequent the Wal-Marts there very often. The fabric in the smaller store is usually a better quality. There are no local quilt stores around. It is either mail (internet) order or Wal-Mart for most people in our area.

There are lots of folks who do not have access to computers or don't know how to use them. A sizable number of these folks quilt and quilt. They use straight stitch or older machines for the most part and turn out quilts that are both functional and pretty.

Quilting is a real art form. I think sometimes we forget what gifted people those were that made true pieces of art out of scraps and used clothing.

No matter where the fabric is purchased, the quilts are beautiful because of the love and care that goes into the planning and construction.

When our WMart was getting ready to clear out their fabric Dept. they got in a lot of fabric that was marked down to $2 a yd. There was some very very nice fabric in that lot! Very nice! I stocked up at that price of some of the better fabrics.

sewbug, where did you get the tread counter? I want one!
I have gotten fabric at WalMart, especially to use for crafts that I'm not going to wash. I've also gotten some that I've washed (I'm an avid pre-washer) and found some very nice things. Like others have said, I think it's the buyers at the stores--what do they like. Of course, I much prefer QIAD fabrics, but sometimes in a hurry and some specialty fun fabrics I've gotten at WalMar. Generally I am not a Wal-Mart shopper for anything I can get someplace else, even if I have to pay a bit more.
I have had a real problem shopping at Jo'anns, although I have shopped there but not bought anything because everything that was good looking quality was expensive!!!!
I am really eager for the fabrics at the Paducah store to also be featured on the website for sale.

TooMuchFabric. I was interested to read about Oklahoma being a depressed state. I think people outside of the US think everyone in the US is wealthy and don't realise that there are rich and poor the same as everywhere. My DD lives in Ca (near to QIAD) and her husband has a good job so they are very fortunate but she had a part time job in Lowe's for a while and it made her very grateful for what she has even though one of her children is disabled. She told me that many of the staff were just waiting for the next payday.
My husband and I are retired and are very thankful we have enough money to live without having to work as many retired are.
Hope you all had a happy Christmas and that the New Year brings peace.

We have a lot of Amish in our community too and our Walmart has more fabric than ever and new stuff coming in all the time..I dont know where the Amish would shop, as most dont have computers,and most have horses and buggies,and no where else to go to get it. I think they must have taken that into consideration. Our local mager was certainly doing his best to keep ours.I would not want to be Amish, but I admire the greatly and love to visit their stores.

The Wal-Mart near my home re-modeled about a year ago & cut way back on the fabric selection they carry. I can't afford to pay $8/yard for fabric so I look forward to Wal-Mart's fabric. Now there are other stores by my work I can shop at. The Joann Fabric shops here are dirty & I don't care to shop there. And the Hancok Fabric store closed that was next to my father's house.
