Thank you everyone for your help and advice! I finished the quilt before Christmas, and it is just wonderful. My son loves it. I probably won't use heavy denim for the front & back of future quilts - its terribly heavy to work with and was even more difficult to wash and dry....AND dry. I finally had to take it to our local dry cleaners so that she could dry it in her huge dryer, the local laundromat dryers just tumbled with low heat for 2 hours, and it was still wet. The finished size is 91 X 77 (The starting blocks were 8.5, with a 3/4" inch seam allowance) and I had used 7" blocks of fleece as batting. Again, thank you all!!!!!!!!

I'm now planning on making a rag quilt with different stonewashed denims (burgundy, green, black, blue & khaki) for the front, and identical colors in corduroy for the back. Does anyone have any tips on making this one? I plan on using a black plaid flannel as the batting - having exposed seams to the front. Does anyone have tips on using corduroy?

Sorry, I can't help you with the corduroy question, I have never used corduroy in any of my quilts. Maybe you could make a sample block and wash it a couple of times and see what happens. I do that when I am not sure how a fabric will work out in my quilts.

I love your denim quilt, it really turned out nice.

I made a denim quilt for my grandson when he was born, but I never thought of making it into a rag quilt. I used my serger to do the seams and I added a flannel backing. I unstitched the pockets from the jeans and then stitched them on coordinating blocks so they could be used to hide toys. It was so heavy that I just tied it instead of quilting it.

That is really a cute quilt SewSew. Love those pockets! I never though t of making a sample block as a test run - but will do that. And if I can use corduroy, I'm wondering if it will be as hard to handle as the pictured denim quilt. That was a monster to handle, but it was my fault for using heavy denim for front and back....however, I was anticipating that it would really take a beating in a boy's dorm room at college, plus he's still got 3 more years of school. I'll do the test run and let you know how it goes. The corduroy that I've already purchased is 100% cotton. Keep ya posted!

I used cordoroy to make my son a quilt many years ago and then apllicaed different male things like a fishing pole and fish, baseball etc. Lasted quite a few years with a young man not taking good care of it.

Did you have to handle the corduroy differently than you would denim homegirl? Was it a rag quilt or did it have bound edges? I was just curious if the corduroy will rag like denim does.

I love the pictures of the quilts! Nice job KarenM. That looks like a beautiful quilt. I think it'll hold up quite well to life in the dorm!! The cordouroy idea sounds really good. I like that it;s soft and it has texture too. I wonder if it'll fray into tiny bits of fuzz or just rag out?? A sample block would be really helpful.

Oh and I like the idea of cutting off the pockets and re-sewing them on. I wanted to include pockets but with all of the rivets and the waistband so near to the top of the pocket I wasn't sure how to do it. From now on I'll cut and save the pockets.

Has anyone used the "stretch" denim in a quilt? A lot of my jeans are that way. I have some old "real" denim to cut up but also some nice light blue strech ones. I think they have 5% lycra on them or something. They are not as heavy.
