Definitely pre-wash the fabrics and dry them....any fading, bleeding of dyes needs to be done before making the quilt....I also iron my fabrics before cutting the quilt out. It can really make a difference in your finished Quilt.

I always wash them. Many moons ago, I worked in a fabric store. My manager told me that most fabrics were treated with formaldehyde. Not sure if that's still the case, but since I have allergies, I always prewash everything that I will be handling or wearing.

FYI - If you plan to use fusibles, I've heard they recommend not to add softner. :)

I used to wash, but now I don't. Mostly because of impatience and I don't feel like ironing if I forget and don't take it out of the dryer right away. I like to get started right away usually when I get home from the store while I'm really excited about a new quilt. I have not had any problems with bleeding dyes. I just throw a cup of vinegar in with the detergent for color fastness. And, as far as shrinkage goes, I like the plucky old fashioned look of the quilt when it comes out!

In case y'all are interested - I just saw on "The Quilt Show" that Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims both say that you should wash your fabrics first.

I always wash. I want to get rid of any chemicals. They make me cough.
