Like Evie, I always wash and dry (with an unscented dryer sheet) my flannel. It makes it fluffier and gets any shrinkage out. And of course, if it is a dark color, gets the excess dye out.
I back all of my quilts with flannel. It justs feels good!

HomespunMary, Lots of times, flannel quilts are made with the seams on the outside. These are called Rag Quilts. The 1/2" seam allowances give you room to clip the seam allowances nearly to the seamline, and then it frays and looks great. I am NOT interested in making a flannel quilt at this time of year - it's so darned hot here in TN. Maybe in the winter I'll tackle one. My grandkids in CT would probably love a flannel quilt.
