I use Kona cotton for my quilt backing. The solid color choice is excellent and the quality will equal the fabric I used in my front.

I don't really have a favorite. I do like to do something different on the back to make the quilt more interesting. For a table runner I just used up what was left and made strips of different sizes until I had a large enough piece to back it. Some day I hope to make 2 sided quilts. I'll need more practice with the front side before I get to that level.

Thinkng about backs I have used. I usually use something that matches the quilt top in someway. If it is christmas, I use something christmasy. For my grandson's patriotic quilt, I used red, white and blue stripe with pieces of the front down the middle of the back. I made a "soccer" quilt for a friend of mine and actually found some fabric that resembled the geometric shapes on the ball. And so on.

I usually consider several things when choosing a backing fabric.
1)When Joanne's or a store like that has their big sale on muslin (like 50% off) I may buy $50.00 worth.

2)If I'm giving it away as a project for others - then I use the muslin because the cost is so low.

3)If it's for my grandbaby and something I want to last as a keepsake - then I splurge on whatever fabric compliments the front of the quilt.

Each project is different and sometimes my budget decides what I purchase. I know I'm not alone in this !

I like flannel or a tone on tone, or a batik of the same colors in the front piece. Sometimes I will use a little of the front material and do a motif in the center of the back. It really depends on who is receiving the quilt.

Flannel on the back of quilts for assisted living residents keeps them from slipping off their laps if they are in a wheelchair or sitting while reading or watching tv. Of course flannel on the back of children's quilts is a must as far as I'm concerned. They love to rub their little faces on it and there is so many really cute prints for children. I find it very hard to resist.

I like to use flannel for kids quilts because it is so cozy. I often piece leftover fabric for other quilts, because I am on a pretty tight fabric budget.

El has some really great wide fabrics for the backing. I worked with it while I worked in Paducah and it really felt like fine quality fabric.

I like to use a printed back that matches the top on Fons & Porter love of quiting they said that when in a show they look for good backing and that a printed material will hide mistaks in your quilting better than a solid color so i always use a print from the top usualy the binding material so it matches not that I have entered a show or ever will but thats what I do.

If I don't need wide backing, I love the Moda Marble. it comes in so many wonderful colors. It's kinda of a solid but kinda not. If that makes sense.
