Re: BACKING FABRIC...WHAT DO YOU USE?
Use plain backing when you want to show off your quilting. Use a print when you would prefer to hide it. I'm not real good at quilting so I prefer to hide mine.
For the first time ever, I bought some wide backing and I bought it from QIAD. It's Quilt Through The Seasons Butternut and it's beautiful. Make a neat bedspread or tablecloth. Could also use it to make matching curtains.
I've made one quilt with Minkee for the backing and my son loves it! Sleeps with it every night.
Made DH's t-shirt quilt with a soft flannel and it's also nice and cuddly.
There's lots of choices out there. Just think about who the quilt is for and what type of wear and tear it will receive. If it will be laundered or is a wall hanging and probably will never be washed. If it's for a child, they prefer something soft and their mother would prefer it to hold up to washing!

The website for Marshall dry goods is great. Most of the fabrics I am interested in are out of stock. Can anyone tell me about ordering something that is listed as out of stock? Do they take your order and send when available? Do you have to check back for availability?

I like to use the wide backings. Marshalldrygoods is good but they are always out of stock. One of my LQS has a really good supply always on hand because they rent out longarms. They sell online and ship.

Re: BACKING FABRIC...WHAT DO YOU USE?
The quilt I'm finishing now will have a pieced back. I had leftover material from the front and made 8" blocks to assemble the back. The quilt is scrappy on the front.
I like to get fabric that is on sale and coordinates with the front. I use cotton, once I used flannel but it was a baby quilt.

Re: BACKING FABRIC...WHAT DO YOU USE?
Hi,
I just ordered the wide backing from QIAD that's on page 2, last one - 3 yards for 9.99. It says it's quality cotton, so I'm going to give it a try. I haven't received it yet, but hoping it works for me. This will be my largest quilt to back so far, as I've only done laps quilts up til now. Gee, I didn't realize just how spendy backing and batting could be for the larger quilts. It was like sticker-shock, lol. I might be sticking to lap quilts, ha ha.
Has anyone else tried this backing that I mention above? I figure if it's from QIAD, it must be just fine!
Happy quilting,
Karla

Re: BACKING FABRIC...WHAT DO YOU USE?
I have used some of the QIAD backings that were 3 yds for $9.99 & as with all of the QIAD fabric, I love it. Untill I tried these, if I couldn't get to the LQS I would pc my backings if I had enough yardage. Like sew 2 or 3 pcs together. Heavy heavy quilting hid it pretty well but I also hand quilt so that meant it took longer. I now get the 108" or whatever it is.

The wide backing ($9.99 for 3 yards) from QIAD is great! I bought 5 different colors and I couldn't be more pleased!

Have to jump in here. I use flannel for all my quilts. Love the cuddly part of a flannel back. I hand quilt - but have not had any problems.
