Re: I NEED HELP !
The Kona Cottons at our lqs are about $5 yard and very nice quality, much better than musling and she carries a gazzilion colors from white white to dark brown. So I know a lot of variety in colors are available in the Kona Cottons. Can you take a piece of your plaid and go shopping??? LOL, sounds fun to me!

Definitely stick with a solid Kona cotton. It is a great fabric and works when tone on tones won't. Bring the plaid with you and find a solid to go with the least dominant color.

I haven't been quilting very long and was surprised when I read that some of you don't use muslin in your quilts. Why do you not like muslin?

Nadine guided me to a very nice Muslin. It's a 200 thread count and very nice. Not like the cheapest kind you can find. I ordered it from Hancock's of Paducah. I really do love it.

I'd go with Kona Cotten, like snow or bone. Amie

Nanjam62 - I'm only speaking for myself here, ok? A lot of muslin is is cheap and is used for the backing of quilts because it is less expensive and we need so much fabric for the back. You can practically read thru it. I have used it for backing fabric because I could get it in 108" wide and I didn't have to piece the backing. Now I can afford to use quilt shop quality fabrics for the whole quilt. Wasn't always like that - had to scrimp for money back in the day. These days I'm a fabric snob but I'm not ashamed of it - I worked my way to this point. There is a diffference in the feel of the fabrics - and I like the feel of the good stuff. I am very, very grateful that I can shop for fabric at my LQSs because there was a time when I was shopping the sale bins at JoAnn's because that's all I could afford - and a lot of it felt like sand paper. After I retire I'll probably be back at the sale bins at JoAnn's. LOL So that's why I don't use muslin. For solid white, I prefer Kona cotton.

If you have enough material left over, you can piece the extra material together to make your backing also. I have seen that done several times and it looks nice.

Re: I NEED HELP !
Thanks cindyg, we make lap quilts for charity (cancer patients) at our church and we make lots & fast. We use a wide medium grade muslin that we buy by the bolt when they have the 50% coupon. But at 50% off we might be able to afford the Kona. Does it come in 90 or 108" width? Although the lap quilts are often narrow enough to use the 45"
By the way, I am retired and love to go to LQS and feel the good stuff and sometimes even splurge on it. Our group went to Paducah show this spring and bought tons of great fabrics at super prices at QIAD tent sale. Sometimes I just have to get in the closet and stroke some of them. LOL I think I've been bitten by the fabric bug

Re: I NEED HELP !
I finally made the big decision and today I cut out two quilts. I decided to make a variatin of Turning Twenty only as a king size auilt it is now a Turning Thitysix. I had enough fat quarters and half yards of plaid that I could cut both quilts at the same time. I really appreciated all your help, your girls are the best ! I knew that you would have some great ideas. Thanks to all. Kay
