Try using small lengths, not more than 18 inches. There's a great tutorial on thread on Superior Thread website.

I place mine in plastic boxes standing up wright. But, I place those little square white things that come in shoe boxes,or other containers. It keeps moisture from hurting anything, and keeps the sun out since I put them in a closet close to my sewing.
