Well, here's my two cents:

Recently I did an applique quilt and in the pattern instructions it talked about using white or very light fabric on top of dark fabric. It recommended using the fusible to bond two layers of light fabric together and then appliqueing it on to the background. I guess the same could be done with your Sue muslin blocks, to stableize them.

I would get a VERY LIGHT WEIGHT soft fusible and get some premium quality muslin and fuse the old block onto the new muslin (but I would definately wash the new muslin before I did this.

Personally, I think that a very high quality quilt fabric as a sashing would not really "look" right...you've got old, loosely woven muslin and to put it next to a very tightly woven premium quality fabric just "screams" that it was never together! If you want the "look" of an old quilt, in this case, I would buy a little cheaper grade of 100% cotton. Kona is good, but I definately would wash all the fabrics that you put in this quilt, just to soften them down to "match" the older fabric. Our JoAnn's carry Kona and I know that Hobby Lobby carries it, too.

Please excuse me if I sound "pushy" about this!! lol! But I feel strongly about the historical integrety of old quilt blocks and feel that they should not be made to look "modern".

Good luck with your project!!!
