I have an old book that does the quilt as you go method. It has some wonderful instructions. Here is a picture of it. You may find it on eBay or in a thrift store.

I have saved instructions on quilt as you go projects from four different places. The one I liked best was at quiltzine.com, but has apparently been removed because I couldn't find it there when I looked just now. But the one at hgtv.com uses a very similar method with a fancier block than the one at quiltzine, and the one at qnm.com is for a table runner.
