Rail Fence is the easiest. Log Cabin is second easiest. I have the Yellow Brick Road pattern but haven't made it yet - it looks really simple, too.

Yellow Brick Road looks deceptively easy.
We used this for the 1st pattern for our quilt club - who had a variety of skill levels.
It was much more challenging for a group of 30 ladies than we thought it would be.
The directions in the kit could have been clearer. Luckily a member had directions from a class she took a few years back and it helped.
The beauty of it is that all of those NEW quilters - once they put together their 1st laptop - went on to using that same pattern for Christmas - grandbabies, etc.
Also - the neat thing is that there are 3 block patterns that you can turn around on their sides whichever way you want.
When I made my Red/White/Blue scrappy laptop - I made sure that no 2 same fabric patterns touched! So that was fun spreading the blocks out on my bed and re-arranging them.
I end up giving it to my son and his family - they are stationed at Fort Hood in Texas. GO ARMY!!!

Re: easiest quilt ever!
The "yuck" factor for me, with the Yellow Brick Road is that I hate cutting--! With the YBR, after you have cut, you sew, then cut, then sew, then cut, then sew, then cut AGAIN...eeeee! There really isn't any other way to put it together. If a quilter doesn't mind going back and forth, the YBR is a great beginners' quilt. I wouldn't call it "fast" though.
With the Rail Fence or the Tossed Nine, you cut, then sew, then cut, and then you are putting blocks together to make your top. Voila'! Much better choice for a cutting-hater like me...

Mcmema, don't be afraid of the Irish Chain. A single Irish Chain is just nine-patch blocks with solid blocks of fabric. Works up pretty fast once the pieced blocks are together! The QIAD book explains it really well.

"Take Five"...simple cutting, no points, few seams to match, great results. It's by " The Teacher's Pet ". Take 5 minutes, choose 5 fabrics and in 5 hours you have a quilt. It really went that fast...well making the top did, and I'm a slow sewer.
