prewash or not???
Hello all! I am from an old school sewing background being taught that its always best to prewash your fabrics in the same manner that you would care for them in the finished project. However in spending hours pouring through all of the Quilt in a Day theater programs I have yet to hear El discuss this topic. Have things changed and are ladies now quilting with the sizing and shipping chemicals still on the fabrics?
Thanks

Re: prewash or not???
Hi Suzzysewingbasket!
I always prewash because of the chemicals and sizing on the fabrics. Also, I would hate for a finished quilt top (or whatever) to get ruined by having some of the colors bleed and/or shrinkage. Better safe than sorry, I say.
Using those color catcher sheets is a big help, too, especially with batiks and dark colors.
I don't believe that Eleanor is a pre-washer, though! LOL

They say quilt quality fabric does not bleed like cheaper fabric but I'm not sure about that

In my opinion you can't go wrong by pre-washing. On the other hand, you might go wrong if you don't! With the amount of time and money it takes to make a quilt these days, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Thank you so much ladies! I agree just wasn't sure if things had changed. Has anyone ever heard of using vinegar to set bright colors? I have also read that salt works too? are we adding these into the rinse cycle? Thanks again! getting ready to start some Christmas projects and with all these deep rich colors and the vibrant reds just wanted to do my homework first!!
hugs to all!

The only thing that I prewash is flannel. There is so much shrinking with it that I always side with caution. I do not prewash any other fabrics.

Re: prewash or not???
I buy a lot of charms and layer cakes. Since I can't prewash these, I don't prewash the backing or anything else, (unless it's flannel, which I always wash).
If I buy yardage, I do prewash that, but I hate the darned ironing afterwards if I have very much!
