have you made quilts or pillows with fleece? HELP!

Post by Kittyquilt9292 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 2:06 pm

Has anyone made a quilt or a large lounge pillow with fleece fabric? If so, how did you do it?

I have a nephew who is graduating high school and going to the University of Maryland. I wanted to make him either a throw size quilt or a large lounge pillow using the UD Terrapins fabric. I have scoured the net and only find fleece! My DSIL has looked in MD and has only found fleece.

Any ideas would be very welcome. Or what else could I make him from the fleece? thanks bunches, carol/kittyquilt

Fleece is very easy to work with. I have made several robes of it, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to work with. Just a nice throw with a fringed edge would be nice for a guy. I have not made pillows of any kind, but imagine it would be great- either with a pillow form, or stuffed with fiber-fil.

I have backed a lot of quilts with that very soft, fluffy fleece. I found lap size throws at discount stores like Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc for a fraction of the cost of yard goods. They even have these throws/blankets up to king size. I don't use batting when I back quilts with fleece, it keeps them light yet still nice and warm. When you cut the fleece, it does make a bit of a mess but it is definitely worth it since the fleece is so cozy. I backed my granddaughter's tee shirt quilts with fleece and they take them on all of their bus trips for volleyball. Go for it, you will love the results!

I have backed two quilts with fleece... both were quickies and I had to get them done... I put the fleece to the right side of the quilt and sewed all around leaving an opening, then I turned the quilt right side out and sewed up the opening... I have never thought of putting a binding around it but I bet that would have been cute...

can't wait to see yours Carol.

I made a small pillow and blanket for my son's NFL team. For the pillow, one side was team logo pattern and the other, I cut four squares of size you want, a solid color and one of team logo. Then reversed them on next row. I did both in the "raggy" style. Very easy and durable.

Back again! I sometimes Google a specific school or team and find fabric that way too. Some only come out in fleece I have found.

I've never worked with fleece, but received a lap throw out of fleece that was purchased already made in a store...it has serged edges. It's great for a light, yet warm covering..and washes like a dream! The fleece would be perfect for a teen/college student to take to games and carry in a car.

My plan is to make some for the grands..
