Someone on here helped me a couple of years ago with free motion on the Singer 401, but I don't remember who it was. I tried for a little while to do the fm, but I was not very successful. I really want to get back to it, but can't remember how to even set up my machine. I would appreciate any help you may have to offer. Thanks

I don't know your particular machine - but in setting up free motion - you need to drop the feed dogs and sometimes move the needle to the darning position. Also you need to add the darning foot for free motion stitching.
There may be your answer in the owner's manual on how to set up for darning - that is what usually works.
You control how much you move for the size of the stitching.
It is helpful to use the gloves that have a grip on the fingers - this way you won't have you hands possibly sliding around -
Oh yes - remember to breathe as you do it!!
Hope that this may jog your memory on how to get started

Yes, your information does help, and thank you so much. I have pulled out my manual, and while I don''''t have the gloves, I will definitely check them out. I remember now hearing about the gloves, but had not thought about them in my effort to FMQ. I do have the darning foot, and I have dropped the feed dogs, so I guess I am on my way. Thanks again for your help.
