Hello Ladies
How are you all tonite..I hope that you have been sewing tons of pretty things lately...

What are some ideas you can give this semi-newbie on how to make a really cute newborn baby quilt?

How big should it be? What are some good color combinations?

Thanks for your ideas
happy quilting

I like my baby quilts to be 45 x 48 - this is so I can use a single piece of fabric for the back and it is a nice size for a crib and for a toddler to drag round later. I have made many quilts this size for my own grandchildren and my nieces and nephews.

As to a pattern - there are so many to choose from - colors - seems like the new mothers out there really are in the chocolate browns and blues - stripes, prints, dots etc.

Also for my little boy quilts I use a prarie point edging instead of a binding - I use up my leftover fabrics from the quilt top that way and it looks fun. For my little girl quilts (someday I will get one - only have boys) I use a ruffle.

So have fun designing one!

Ash, my first baby quilts were tied. Then I advanced to quilting in the ditch..just squares sewed together in a diagonal pattern..it's simple and easy. I did flannel and some cotton ones..cotton is a little easier to work with, the flannel will stretch some.

Jana is probably right about the newest color combos..and I've seen alot of the brights...primary colors, red, yellow, blue and green..which would be good for both boys and girls. Does the mom have a preferrence?? You might ask the color of the babys room, too.

I really like Jana's suggestion on the prairie points..that adds so much to a simple quilt.

Have fun and let us see your quilt when it's done!

Any pattern that interests you is great. It all depends on what you want. In the last month or so in the photo section, there have been some very neat ones - one from a panel, one with race cars, one with blocks and sunshine applique.

I used fusible grid and did 1 1/2" pink squares for a friend a couple years ago. Once I had the squares cut, it was a snap. I ironed on the squares, ironed all the folds in one direction(longitude), sewed those seams, snipped the intersections, pressed them in alternating directions, and then pressed and sewed the other direction(latitude). There may have been some baby pink in there, but there was hot pink, maroony pink, and all others. It was fun.
