30's 40's 50's, what is the difference

Post by swakins » Fri Apr 10, 2009 5:56 pm

I don't really know the difference in some of these fabrics. I kind of know what 30's are, but I saw a swap where someone said, 30's not 40's, so I don't know what 40's look really is. Anyone able to direct me to some photos of what defines each of these?

Sue, if you have a copy of Victory Quilts, the photos are good examples of the 40's "look".

I think the fabric styles in each decade had something to do with fabric dyes and how they were made. Anyone care to chime in with a history lesson?

I still have some trouble with this:) If I have a question, I usually show the fabric to my grandma. She lived during the 40's and is really good at telling what time period fabric came from. Wish I could help more, but I'm still learning this myself.

I also have trouble with this so stay away from any swaps that deal with those fabrics. However, if you go to your fav online fabric site and put whatever year of fabric you want to look at in the search box, you should get some results and might be helpful.

The colors and prints make a distinction of which era it is from also. Brighter colors and cheerful prints came into production after the War to give everyone a "lift" and hope. I love all of these era's and their beautiful fabrics .............hope this helps.

There is a sonderful book called 'Clues in the Calico'.
I have had it for a number of years and it is sort of my quilting Bible. It can help you to learn about fabrics, dyes, patterns of the various periods. It contains a wealth of information. I have recently been researching the fabrics of the Civil War period and it has really helped......Just a suggestion..... QuiltinKay--Kay

Thank You Kay for mentioning that book. I am going to try to find it. I would love to learn more about the different periods. All I know is that I love the 30's,40's but I can't really tell one from another just by looking. Same with the CW fabrics. Unless they are in a grouping and marked I cannot tell they're from that era. Sounds like a great book to have. Thank again!
