quilt repairing?

I need help ideas. A quilt I made years ago for my child has been used much and is coming apart at the binding. The binding is worn thin at top needing a new binding. It was so thin that a hand caught a small hole and it was ripped into the pieced top. How do I repair. (Should have replaced the binding when it was still intact) Now I don't have that option and the rest of the quilt is still in great condition. The top area that ripped is a 4" wide white border with the binding on it. Now, in that border I embroidered hearts with letters in them to spell out my childs name. Do I cut a strip of white border and hand applique it on over the hearts and name and add new binding all around? Any suggestions?

I would take off the binding and undo any quilting that was in the border. Then I would put a fusible backing on a piece of white fabric that matched the border and fuse it underneath the rip, making the rip come together as close as possible on top. I would put new double binding on the quilt. A repair on a loved quilt adds more love.
