Paper Pieceing, Applique and Scraps

Post by knitnoid » Wed Apr 30, 2008 8:27 am

Slowly, very slowly as scraps tend to multiply like rabbits, I'm working though my scraps following Bonnie Hunters Scrap User's System http://quiltville.com/scrapusersystem.s ... stem.shtml.

After I finish cut out blocks and squares I occassionally have pieces which are weird shapes or too small to cut out a 2" square (the smallest I'm keeping).

So,I've "heard" that small pieces are good for paper pieceing and apppliquing, but since I don't do either of those things, I dont't know if it's true. I suppose they are actually big enough for 'crumb blocks', but I don't want to start that either.

Maybe I just answered my own question. Which is if it's big enough for a crumb block toss it in a bag and then pass it along to someone in the future.

That was a very interesting site Knitnoid. Gives me some ideas about what to do with my scraps. Anything 2" or smaller I put into a little bin because I do applique from time to time. For instance, the Sun Bonnet Sue swap. You might be able to get an a hand, arm or shoe out of somethng that small.

I have heard of making a sweatshirt jacket out of all the small scraps. You have to unsew the sweatshirt and do one section at a time. Using a basting spray you stick all the scraps on. Then you just closely stipple quilt each section and sew back together. I have been thinking about giving this a try myself to use up those small odd shaped scraps.

Thanks for the info. Those quilts were amazing. Just goes to show you that most scraps are not waste after all. I'll definitely think twice before throwing out even the smallest pieces. Lori

When I had to stop and organize my stash since it had gotten completely out of control, I declared anything less than a fat 8th to be 'scrap'. As a result, not only my 3 gal popcorn tin of scraps was full, I filled up a 10 x 5 x 12 giftbag and a 27 liter box (like the ones I store my stash in.) It's amazing how much fabric you can cram into something if you aren't trying to be neat. However, I ariated the fabric over the weekend trying to get enough fabric for a quilt completely from my scraps and it was overflowing. So I've been cutting up the scraps into something usable.

Top to bottom: Strings; 1 1/2" strips; 2" squares & 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
2 1/2" strips; 2" strips; 2 1/2" squares and 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangles;
parts & pieces of quilt blocks - either extra or abandoned; crumbs

Admittedly there was some stuff in all of the boxes and the strings and 1 1/2" strips were rather full, but the rest came out of the giftbag.
