What is a point d'paris stitch?

On Aol a quilting html suggested a point d'paris stitch for applique.
I'm thinking this might be a buttonhole stitch. It described the stitch as going back and forth and then biting a bit of the applique. It was also called Madeira Applique. She said it is stitch 112 on the Pfaff 7570, On the Viking Designer 1 it was stitch D6.I have a BabyLock Esante ESE2. The stitches don't have numbers they just show on the computer screen. I just pulled out my D1 card for my Quilt Desginer and D6 looks like a buttonhole stitch to me.

I have a Designer 1 and the D6 stitch on mine is an Heirloom stitch, looks to me like a blanket stitch, only doubled. See if I can explain it -- on the edge of the fabric it takes a long stitch, then back to the starting point, forward again. Then a stitch into the fabric perpendicular to the edge. Again, it takes the stitch back to the second hole, then back to the 3rd hole. When the stitch is finished it looks like a capital L, only each 'leg' has been stitch twice. A very strong blanket stitch. Hope this helps

I just re-read your post ... yep, on the Designer 1, what you described is what mine does... only its a Blanket stitch, stitched twice before it moves to the next stitch. My machine said to use a wing needle.

I took a picture of my menu on my D1 of the D6 heirloom stitch... hope it helps!
The length of the stitch is a 4.5 and the width is a 5.0

thanks for finding that info for me, and even a picture of it. I don't know if i have the stitch on my Esante Babylock. There is a buttonhole or whatever else you call it on my machine, just maybe not one that goes over the stitch twice. I'll have to experiment with my machine. Thanks again Jan
