storing fabric

I finally have a sewing room. It is small and long and I don't have a ton of room. I was wondering how do you store your fabric? I have tons and tons, my husband and kids laugh at me cause I have so much. But I feel overwhelmed when I look at the stacks cause it just looks cluttered. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mine is orgainzed by color/theme into plastic containers - not necessarally the best storage solution, but generally works for me -- until I start to pull fabrics from multiple bins for something. But so far, I've kept it up but that may not be saying much since it's only been 30 days.

I bought white book shelves and folded all my fabric around a ruler making it all uniformed. Since your room is long, bookshelves will probably work great along one wall. I have to be able to see all my fabric or I will start rummaging around in bins and make a big mess and waste time. Fabric isn't my storage problem though it's all the extras that go with it! Rulers, stencils, specialty tools, thread, pins, patterns, batting, ironing, etc. I am still looking for the perfect storage solution.

I went from the whole upstairs to a small room downstairs so I stored alot upstair in large toats and and have a bigrack with sheves and have alot of fabric on them in baskets and have a bookshelf for my other stuff and Im putting in peg board when my husband get around to it with hooks so that i can put mu rullers on them along with other stuff.

Hi Kathy...I went to wal-mart a couple of years ago and bought a whole bunch of the clear 3 drawer plastic drawers. I don't put the wheels on them so that I can stack them 2 high. They fit inside of closet, so I can close them off if I need to, I can also fit one set of drawers under each of my six foot tables. I live in the desert so we get lots of dust and sand, I didn't want my fabric out where it could get dirty. Seems to be working pretty well me.

Wow such good ideas. For the bigger pieces of fabric I folded them and then tied crotchet thread around them to keep them neat. I wish I had a bigger space but it is small and at least I have a space. It is so hard to be creative with a mess although sometimes you get ideas from the mess. I use to strictly do clothing sewing till I got bit by the quilting bug so I have all kinds of fabrics. I love the one pic of the quiltville site, I would love to have that stash.

Well, DH is building me two cabinets for my fabric storage - not that I have a lot of fabric. He has started on them but we both have allergy problems right now and feel horrible and then the twins were born over the weekend so nothing much is getting accomplished by either of us. Anyway, each of my cabinets will have 5 shelves and they will have glass doors to help keep the dust away but I'll still be able to see all my fabrics. I'm looking forward to them.

Kathy, I store my fabric in plastic containers, under my cutting table. My table has the fold out legs that "T" out from the center and curve down. I'm sure you've seen them at church or school, they don't cost too much but are sturdy. A few months back I saw a suggestion of putting the table up to a comfortable height for cutting fabric, by putting the legs in about a 9 inch piece of PVC pipe to raise it up. This works great AND I had more room for more fabric under it!! Won't tell you what the DH said when he realized he gave me more room. LOL!
