Re: mug mats
I'm gonna just wager this: if you used tree ornament patterns, I'll bet they would make great mug rugs. You could use any colors to match the decour you're going for. I know Christmas at Bears Paw has ornaments and I'm sure others do as well.
You could also use the smaller size blocks that are available at quilterscache.com. They have blocks by the size. All the way to I think 1 inch. I would think a mug mat should be about 4-6 inches square, or about that size oblong or round.
Just some thoughts, these patterns should be pretty easy to come by. carol/kittyquilt

Re: mug mats
I've made a few using simple 4 patch, or what ever pattern I felt like doing, only smaller. Have fun.

Try the Kaleidoscope patterns. They are round and you can make them any size depending on the size triangle ruler you use. It's a fun way to try out the match point of a pattern!
Have Fun,

Re: mug mats
any kind of small pattern would work, like putting together a potholder.
I made mine with the folded squares and stacked different sizes and make stars . like this one can make any size
