Working with fleece

Post by Kittyquilt9292 » Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:29 am

My Friends, When working with fleece, is it necessary to hem the edges, assuming it is not being used in a quilt, for example, a scarf? Do you need to use a special size needle or thread? How about the stitch length? I've got some fleece and am about to start making some scarves for Bransmom and just realized I've never worked with fleece before, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Oh, how much we assume until we get started and realize how much we don't know!!!! Thanks bunches, carol/kittyquilt

A regular hem in fleece will add a big long bump, it won't lay flat like a regular hem. The best quality fleece will not stretch very much or curl up at the edges. I found a good buy on fleece and it wasn't good quality, it stretched and curled up horribly. A serged edge or stay stitched edge will be needed for the stretchy fleece.

Have you seen the furry fleece sold at QIAD? I just looked at it today and it's really neat:

Whenever I do fleece I use my serger on the edges.

If you do hem them, use some type of adhesive to hold it in place. 505 spray is good or those little 1/4" strips ironed in place. Otherwise it shifts like crazy!
