How do you sort your fabric

Post by MissSudie » Wed Feb 20, 2008 5:46 am

I sew a little of everything, clothes, home decor and quilts and I need to sort my fabric more efficiently so it will be easier to get to when I need it. I've got all the cottons together, all the fleece together, all the holiday fabrics sorted into groups, etc. I'm overwhelmed and at a complete standstill. How do you sort your fabrics to make them easier to use?

I don't have as much fabric as some, and most of mine is smaller pieces. The smaller stuff is sorted by color in 28 quart bins. I've got one just for blue, started another one for white/cream, and then have the other colors grouped together in several other bins. I also have a bin for cat prints, another for novelty, a whole overflowing drawer of music theme prints.

Now having said this, I also have a couple of bins which are mixed fabrics. I've been working on several quilts lately, purchased new fabric (ok, it was October) and I really simply need to re-sort.

All I have are cottons, flannels. I have them folded on shelves and in no certain order. Some are put together for 1 project. I need to do a much better job at this one day. I do have a stack for each, Laurie, Stephie, Matt, Zac, Riley, & Justin, the Grandkids. As I see a fabric they would love it goes in their stacks. If you could know these kids, you could recognise their stack. LOL Sorry I am no help. I need help too! LOL

mine are sorted by type cotton, tulle, fleech, satin, silk, and so on i actually keepthem in different locations - then i sort by color groups with the exception of holiday, orientals, landscape, florals

i also stack for each quilt as i collect and tie with scrap and design and or pattern on top

Mine is folded on shelves. Most cotten is sorted by color, red, blues, etc. But I also have a stack of calicos, one of Christmas and one of Autum. Then there is a little stack of flannel. None of the stacks is over 8" tall. On the top shelf I have 3 piles of fabric, backing and pattern that are waiting to become quilts.

Everyone is differnt and has differnt methods, good luck finding yours.

Thank you ladies, your input is greatly appreciated. I've been needing to sort things out so they were more usable but I end up just giving up because it feels so overwhelming. I've now started making piles of colours and content.
Thanks again,
Toni
