You use at least a 1/2 seam with flannel rag quils but I've always used a regular 1/4 for anything else.

I have made several rag quilts and I always use the 1/2 inch seam, as that is the way I was taught. I think it helps to give you a little more room when you are cutting for the raggy edges. But I will try the 1/4 inch and see how that works.

I am working on a flannel lap quilt and decided to use the serger to sew it together after reading all of the comments. When I washed the fabric some of it frayed right down to my stitching line. Others barely frayed. I am just using the 1/4" seam but the seams will be finished.

What do you think? Will it keep it from raveling? Jo Ann

I would think that using a serger would put an end to the freying, but someone with more expierence with flannel will know for sure.
